Transcendental aspects of architectural design as factors of sustainability

This thesis deals with complex processes, relationships and phenomena which go beyond the assumed and accepted materialistic perception of the world in general and the process of architectural design specifically. It clarifies and actually redefine the sustainability from a point of higher universal principles forming our environment. At the beginning this thesis presents an extensive knowledge base of existing holistic design systems including Feng-shui, sacred geometry, geomancy or numerology. The purpose is to build and establish a solid foundation for understanding and further research as well as objectively interpreting lesser known topics as a whole. On the basis of intersecting information through the above mentioned topics we specify the hypothesis which proposes the pre-existence of one unifying design matrix of harmonic structures in architecture. The structure of its verification takes us from an analysis of the science of human perception to systems of self-similar contextual references of animated and inanimated forms. These systems of emergent form and flow are basically known as fractals, and could be expressed in both mathematical and geometrical languages. The thesis research then consists of analysing chosen examples of urban and architectural scale in sense of fractality, symbolism and geometrical matrices. We include and integrate the research of associated and relevant phenomena in pedagogical practice, and a case study of the application of fractals in development of a chosen town. From the results of this thesis we abstract five non-dogmatic guidelines or tenets for architectural design; which are supported by experimental verification on some of the author´s buildings. These tenets stand as pillars of implosive architecture. This kind of architecture in context of transcendental overlaps means a possibility of how to bring our anthropogenic environment closer to the natural and harmonic code of the Universe.

Jana Vrchovecká: From the sensual experience to the transcendental one The tradition of sensualism or vitalism is rarely represented in the French literature. During the twentieth century several authors tried to revive this tendency. The first apologist was André Gide, whose work Les Nourritures terrestres (1893) was considered as a doctrine of the sensual attitude, and for its spiritual overlap it was even called The New evangel. The deification of the material aspect of the reality becomes the link with the last holder of the Nobel Literature Prize: Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio. In his early essay: L'Extase matérielle (1968) he also exalts the sensual experience as the base of the transcendental one. The first part of the work compares the authors' sensual attitude in the mentioned works by the analyse of the particular senses. The synchronic participation of all them should provoke the second state of consciousness whose first grade is the ecstasy and the most desired one is the prophetic mind. The second part analyses the factors that contribute to this double objective. The necessary condition is the anchoring in the present moment. Kant and Husserl on Transcendental Character of Experience

The aim of the thesis is to examine both Husserl's and Kant's transcendentalism in a way that would avoid the tendency to put the main accent on Husserl, which is an approach common to almost all literature dealing with this topic so far. Since it is for the most part Husserl's own critique of Kant that inspires such ongoing underestimation of Kant in comparison to Husserl, this work focuss on the question of the legitimacy of this critique. The core of the thesis is an original interpretation of Kant's transcendental philosophy which, instead of taking for granted the phenomenological point of view, attempts to describe Kant's philosophical enterprise from its own perspective and in its own right. In its second part, the thesis provides a brief description of how Husserl, starting initially from the position of descriptive psychology, arrives at a transcendental dimension. When so put side by side, it becomes evident that the two transcendental positions are in fact very different. Husserl's critique of Kant then appears as unjustified, even though quite understandable as an attempt to draw back from certain immature motives of his own philosophy.
